Riaan Paulsen follows up!

The QueenSix Boundary Hotel Poker League Grand Final has been taken down by Riaan Paulsen, completing what has been a phenomenal week for Paulsen, backing up his second place in the QueenSix Dolphin Hotel Poker League Grand Final. For his efforts Paulsen pocketed a cheque for $900, presented by the Boundary Hotel owner, former South Sydney winger John Minto. Once reaching final table, Paulsen managed to acquire a large stack and was not afraid to put his chips at risk to maintain and build it. He often showed enormous nerve with several audacious bets when he sensed weakness. His final heads up battle against Tahuna Hyde was an engaging affair, after pushing all in with 7♠3♣ against Hyde’s J♣3♦ and finding himself dominated he managed to catch a 7 on the river to cripple Hyde, and then had his A♥9♦ survived the next hand against Hyde’s A♠5♥.

Playing with a starting stack of exactly 9,200 chips, Paulsen went into the first break with only 7,600 left. From there some creative plays enabled him to build his stack until reaching final table, when he was able to double up when his pocket 7’s survived a race against two over cards. From there he picked up another huge pot just before the second break when, in the big blind, he was dealt A♦J♣, which held up after another player tried an all-in steal with Q♣7♦. From there it was relatively smooth sailing to the final heads up battle, with his chip count rarely falling below 30,000.
